I have read a few books on innovation, brainstorming and how to overcome obstacles in business, this is my favourite by some distance.The book is split into three main sections, the first looks at how our minds work and how that can actually hinder problem solving (the way we latch on to patterns and experience and so on). The second is a dozen different techniques to help you innovate or solve problems (and it tells you which techniques suit which type of problem / innovation best). At the end of every one is a real business example which is always really interesting and taught me lots I didn’t know. The third section looks at how people actually have brainstorming sessions, why they’re often a big let down (I can relate to that!) and how to make the sessions much more productive and invigorating (by using the 12 techniques).It was written in a really warm, interesting way with lots of little ideas along the way to accompany the 12 big ones, and I absolutely flew through it - though I’m sure I’ll refer to it time and again. I will use it at work, but even if I wasn’t going to I’d be glad I read it because it helps you think about challenges you face in a different way that is really refreshing and helpful.
